'Stop Eviction' Campaign Launch

Edappally: The launch of Design & People's Signature Campaign to Save Vaduthala, a densely-populated area of Cochin Corporation was held at the Changampuzha Memorial Park at Edappally, Kochi on December 29, 2007. Prominent artists from various creative fields, human rights activists and environmentalists from various parts of the city participated in the event. The Chief Guest of the evening was Shri KT Ravindran, Architect, Urban Designer and the Head of the Urban Design Department at the School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi. He inaugurated the online signature campaign. Shri Geo Jose, Shri Martin of the Vaduthala Jankeeya Samithi, Raj Menon and Suku Dass of Deign & People spoke on the occasion. While addressing the gathering Geo Jose pointed out that "Social class of intellectuals and cultural activists were largely oblivious to the 'true' happenings around them in their own city and In this context, the work of Design & People becomes significant."

Ernakulam: www.yesudasan.info — a website on the 'Life and Work of Cartoonist Yesudasan' is being inaugurated by the former Chief Minister of Kerala Honorable Shri K Karunakaran on June 12, 2008 — 70th birthday of the cartoonist. The site developed by Design & People was inaugurated at the Bharat Hotel, Ernakulam. Dr K S Radhakrishnan, Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, presided over the function. People from all walks of life participated at the function organised by Design & People at Bharat Hotel, Ernakulam.

'Helvetica' Screening
Sethu Das, Co-founder of Design & People presents 'Helvetica'.
Cochin: Design & People in association with Open Eyed Dreams screened the much-discussed documentary 'Helvetica' by Gary Hustwit at Kochi, Kerala. The film on the font Helvetica was screened at the IMA Hall, Warriam Road, Ernakulam on June 14, 2008 and was presented by Sethu Das, Co-founder of Design & People. Speaking on the occasion, Sethu Das said "even though Helvetica is Europe's contribution to typeface, it has been controversial. Thanks to its clean and neutral look, many companies, like Coke, which supported the Vietnam War, used Helvetica to give a good impression of itself.''

Periyar River, Kerala: www.periyarriverkeeper.org, the website of the organisation Periyar Riverkeeper led by VJ Jose, Riverkeeper of Periyar was inaugurated by Shri Vijay Crishna and Smt Smita Godrej Crishna on July 27, 2008. The site designed developed by Design & People and hosted by Ibiblio was inaugurated by the Crishnas at the river Periyar inside a boat while taking a ride to the polluted areas of Eloor in Kerala. People from all walks of life attended the programme organised inside a boat which started its journey from Fort Kochi to the pollution-affected areas of Eloor — Kerala's industrial belt.

'Sicko' + 'Angry Monk' Screening
Ernakulam: Design & People and Friends of Tibet in association with Open Eyed Dreams screen two controversial documentaries of this decade — 'Sicko' by Michael Moore and 'Angry Monk' by Luc Schaedler. While Micheal Moore (Director of Fahrenheit 9/11) investigates and compares American healthcare system with that of Cuba, Luc Schaedler travels and documents the life of one of the most controversial monks from Tibet — Gendun Choephel. The documentaries were screened at the OED Basement, Warriam Road, Ernakulam on February 13, 2009.

Noted journalist and novelist Smt KR Meera introduced the activist to the audience. 'Creative Resistance' — popularly known as the Journal of the Outspoken contains writings on vast variety of subjects, such as war, politics, activism and environment. Design & People brought Creative Resistance back to people in the one of the most democratic formats — PDF.

"Design as a Socio-Political Form of Expression"

Frankfurt: On September 22, 2011 Katharina Jourdan of Design & People spoke at Basis Frankfurt, Germany as a part of its "Fall Programme" series of lectures, presentations, workshops and a two-day exhibition that focus thematically on various applied disciplines. The first of the lecture series titled "Design as a Socio-Political Form of Expression", Katherine Jourdan spoke about the Design & People network, which promotes independent, social, political and environmental projects and also the way in which they themselves get involved with core issues. She also spoke briefly about Open Design Philosophy of Design & People and projects such as Periyar Riverkeeper, Friends of Tibet Wellbeing, Buddha Smiles Education etc. Katherine Jourdan also introduced the re-launched, redesigned website of Periyar Riverkeeper — www.periyarriverkeeper.org, a project she was able to work and complete based on her own first-hand experiences during her recent one-month visit to India.
