Wisdom Song: The Life of Baba Amte

Born into privilege and wealth, Baba Amte was a maverick who wanted to live life to the fullest. He realised early on that he had to live, not for himself, but for others - or else all the privilege, position and superior personal qualities would be mere tinsel. The pioneering commune at 'Anandwan' (Baba often calls Anandwan his social service laboratory) where those affected by leprosy could live with dignity and pride; unity marches across India; Narmada solidarity vigil against the state-sponsored devastation - Baba did this and much more. The motto he gave for Anandwan is: "Work Builds, Charity Destroys."

"No programme can be imposed on anyone. Progress must emerge from within our cultural identity. It must relate to our beliefs and aspirations. Modernity itself is not the answer to everything. We must seek solutions that are culturally integral, which fit with our traditions and environmental needs. No government can impose anything on the people. Not even progress." This was Baba Amte's view on the so-called Progress.
