"Free Dr Binayak Sen"
Background: Doctor, human rights activist and Vice President of People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL), Dr Binayak Sen started his work in the rural areas of Chattisgarh, India. He dedicated his life for the welfare and health care of tribal community living in that area. Dr Sen, a defender of human rights had criticised the central and state government for the human rights violations during anti-Naxal operations by the paramilitary forces. In May 2007 he was arrested for supporting the Naxalites but was granted bail by the Supreme Court of India only in May 2009. Later on December 24, 2010, the Sessions' Court found him guilty of supporting the Naxalites and charged him with connections with banned organisations in the state. He was sentenced life-term. The politically-motivated court verdict is now challenged by Nobel laureates, doctors, human rights activists, intellectuals and thinking people across India. According to Amnesty International, "Dr Sen, who is considered a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International, was convicted under laws that are impermissibly vague and fall well short of international standards for criminal prosecution."
